We need Europe
The countries of Europe – even the largest ones – are too small to handle challenges such as growing international crime, climate change and the need to improve competitiveness in times of globalisation. The growing needs for the Union to act outside its own territory to counteract risks of war, oppression, poverty and terrorism also play a crucial role. This is why we need European integration.
- The enlargement of the European Union must continue. The Union should strive to cover all democratic states in Europe that respect human rights – including Turkey.
- A European FBI should be established, acting vigorously against organised crime such as trafficking in persons and drugs, money laundering and terrorism.
- The Union’s foreign policy needs more co-ordination in order to work effectively for peace, democracy and development worldwide. Europe should stand up for free trade.
- The EU must pursue a humane asylum policy, opening its borders to those in need of protection. The carrier’s liability should be scrapped.
Because we see the clear need for a European Union standing strong where it must be strong, we remain critical towards parts of today’s EU: the farming subsidies swallowing most of the resources to the detriment of poor countries – and the tendencies to engage in issues that Member States can better handle on their own. That’s where we want to see reform. The CAP should be abolished and the European institutions be made more transparent and accessible in order to come closer to citizens. A European Constitution needs to be adopted in order to define the competences of the EU.
Sweden should take full part in the European integration process, including the single currency and the European Security and Defence Policy.
