Global solidarity
There is a lack of coherence in European foreign policies. While campaigning for democracy and development, Europe compromises human rights in China or fawns on the Cuban dictator. People in need of protection are being expelled from EU Member States, and the enormous farming subsidies paid to European farmers through the CAP are a serious detriment to developing countries.
Sweden and the EU must pursue a consistent foreign policy characterised by the true struggle for democracy and human rights. Liberals welcome globalisation and want to make more people worldwide able to take advantage of its positive elements. Sweden should work actively against the development of “fortress Europe”, in favour of policy guaranteeing the right to asylum, and opening up for labour immigration. Trafficking in persons must be fought with vigour on all levels.
Democracy must be the superior goal for European development policies. The Common Agricultural Policy should be abolished, and the EU must stand up for free trade. More resources should be spent on Union action for peace, democracy and development worldwide. The United Nations, the Security Council and international law need to be reformed, and the UN obliged to intervene when a state is unable to protect its citizens.
National and European security policies must be adapted to countering and preventing terrorism. A European FBI and improved sharing of intelligence information are ways to achieve this.
