Malmström:
Liberals and Democrats salute adoption of CIA report, but deplore EPP stance
Liberals and Democrats welcome tonight's adoption of the draft interim report on the alleged use of European countries by the CIA for the transport and illegal detention of prisoners by the EP committee on alleged CIA renditions. Adopted by 25 votes in favour, 14 against and 7 abstentions, Liberals and Democrats commented on the vote in which the EPP-ED voted against the report.
ALDE coordinator on the committee Cecilia MALMSTROM (Folkpartiet, Sweden) said: "I am happy that the majority of MEPs on this committee support the report. But it is strange and surprising that the EPP-ED Members continue to deny what the rest of the world acknowledges: that illegal renditions do take place in Europe, that international conventions have been breached and that European citizens have been tortured with the awareness of European governments. Why don't the EPP Members trust Condolezza Rice who has confirmed that these renditions have taken place in Europe?"
Vice Chair of the EP CIA committee Sarah LUDFORD (Lib Dem, UK) said: "The conclusions of this interim report are based on solid and well-researched evidence including direct testimony of victims and flight logs. This proves how Parliament's temporary committee is doing a serious and necessary job. Europe's voters won't understand the disdain of Europe's right-wing parties for human rights. They weaken Europe's credibility both at home and abroad."
The report will be tabled at Parliament's plenary session next July.
