Ik zeg niet dat er geen prostituees bestaan die tevreden zijn over hun beroepskeuze en die als trotse ondernemers willen worden beschouwd. Maar tevreden sekswerkers vormen een miniem onderdeel van de grimmige wereld van de prostitutie. De meeste mensen die hun lichaam verkopen blijken arme en getraumatiseerde jongeren te zijn.
De kloof tussen de vraag naar seksuele diensten en het aanbod van vrouwen die vrijwillig hun lichaam willen verkopen resulteert in gedwongen prostitutie, geleid door de georganiseerde misdaad. We weten wat er gebeurt als de maatschappij te kennen geeft dat prostitutie aanvaardbaar is. Dan stijgt de vraag. Weinig Nederlandse meisjes willen carrière maken door hun lichaam aan vreemden te verkopen. Anderzijds worden meisjes uit arme landen naar Amsterdam gelokt. Een groeiende seksindustrie is een lucratieve handel, die misdadigers aantrekt. Volgens Europol, de overkoepelende politiedienst van de EU, doen de handelaars bij voorkeur zaken in landen met een goed ontwikkelde seksindustrie. De reden is eenvoudig: laag risico en hoge winst. Seksuele avances zijn in Zweden niet verboden, maar het is hier sinds 1999 onwettig om voor seks te betalen. De Zweedse politie ondersteunt de wet omdat ze de resultaten heeft gezien.
Mensenhandelaars mijden Zweden in het algemeen omdat het riskant is hier zaken te doen. De Zweedse recherche stelt vast dat de wet een beletsel tegen de vestiging van georganiseerde internationale prostitutienetwerken vormt. Als meer landen, zoals Nederland, zich door de Zweedse wetgeving zouden laten inspireren, zou dit een harde klap voor de moderne slavenhandel zijn. Zonder vraag is er geen aanbod.

I don't deny that there are prostitutes who are satisfied with their choice of profession and want to be viewed as proud entrepreneurs. But satisfied sex workers constitute a sliver in the dire world of prostitution. Most people caught in the business of selling their bodies are poor and traumatized youths. The gap between the demand for sexual services and women who voluntarily want to sell their bodies results in forced prostitution at the hands of organized crime.
We know what happens when society signals that prostitution is acceptable. Demand increases. Few Dutch girls plan on making a career selling their bodies to strangers. On the other hand, girls from poor countries are lured to Amsterdam. A growing sex industry is a lucrative business that attracts criminals. According to the European Union's Police Agency, Europol, traffickers prefer business in countries with a well-developed sex industry. The reason is simple: low risk and high profit. While soliciting sex is not a crime in Sweden, it is has been illegal to pay for sex here since 1999. The Swedish police support the law because they have seen the results.
Human traffickers tend to avoid Sweden because it's hazardous to do business here. Sweden's National Criminal Investigation Department concludes that the law is a barrier against the establishment of organized cross-border prostitution rings. If more countries, like the Netherlands, could be inspired by the Swedish legislation it would be a severe blow to the modern slave trade. Without demand there is no supply.
